This blown-glass vessel with silver-leaf detail can be used as a vase for your favourite blooms or a wine carafe on an elegantly dressed dinner table. When properly lit the glass seems to glow from within, like a magical genie's bottle!

A few coats of crisp decorator white on the existing melamine cabinetry did wonders to brighten up this windowless galley kitchen. The new satin nickel hardware on the lower cabinetry is traditional in style, yet contrasts very nicely with the more contemporary brushed stainless steel hardware chosen for the freestanding cabinetry. The uppers are without hardware, creating a cleaner look.

Maximizing height and storage capacity wherever possible is a must in a small space and the kitchen is no exception–a clean, uncluttered row of covered wicker storage boxes run along the upper cabinets close to the ceiling. They also help to warm up the space and balance the weight of this side of the room, as do the dark walnut picture frames hung over the stove (not shown).

The original laminate counter and stainless steel sink are given new life with some upscale and practical new additions. The professional-grade solid stainless steel faucet is like modern sculpture and the extended height of the goose-neck design makes filling awkward vases or large pots a breeze. Investing in a quality-made instrument like this that you can take with you when you move is really something worth considering.

While replacing the entire counter was not an option, adding a substantial granite cutting board in a rich, chocolate brown adds just enough functionality and flare. The formerly uninspiring drywall backsplash was upgraded with vertical tongue-and-groove paneling. Surprisingly inexpensive and a great do-it-yourself project, this new treatment infuses some much-needed architectural detail. Keeping the backsplash the same colour as the cupboards doesn't cut the space in half, and brings more attention to your accessories.
