Pets in a small space? Here's an innovative solution. Anyone with a lovable family dog around the house knows that he needs his own place to call home–which in Barney's case is usually anywhere he wants! But when this American Cocker Spaniel isn't in the doghouse, it easily converts into an upscale, upholstered chenille bench that provides extra seating. Just don't mention it to Barney–he thinks it's his idea!

Our design approach to the bedroom was the same as with the entire space–to create an uncluttered, masculine environment that is neither completely modern nor traditional. We began by continuing the use of earthtones, here with a restful sage green for the walls. The bed linens and accessories are in shades of putty, chocolate, a hit of black for contrast and metallic bronze for drama. It's the multitude of textures that really make this muted palette interesting–woven and quilted fabrics, pressed velvet, fur, leather and suede.

The vertically channeled headboard is upholstered in a deep earthy grey-green fabric and framed with a double custom moulding normally used for picture framing. This dynamic loft-style headboard that rises to ceiling height, provides some sound insulation and balances the weight of the Empire chest of drawers (not shown) on the other side of the small 10' x 10' room.

Lighting is used here to create both drama and focus. Nondescript halogen track lighting blends inconspicuously into the white ceiling, highlighting antique artwork and furniture pieces. The decidedly contemporary brushed steel wall sconces that flank the headboard, provide just enough light for evening reading through their crisply pleated drum shades.

A fashionable woven linen skirt gives new life to an old excercise bench and provides extra hidden storage. The portable freestanding bookcase with lower storage was designed much like a built-in, with crown and panel mouldings, again providing the space with some much-needed architectural detail.
